Food for Thought

Christ’s death is like a bridge; he lay on the Cross and was crucified, and is the bridge between nations and also between ourselves. Jesus can be the bridge between us all because he knows everything human – even to death. He fulfills all these conditions! Jesus is like that.

Holy Week is “The week of the bridge.” That makes it holy. Any week we build bridges among people is Holy Week.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH?     WELCOME!

Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest.

Thank you and welcome.

CORRESPONDENCE TO GRACE

The story of each man is the story of God’s continual watchfulness over him. Each man is the object of the Lord’s special love. Jesus was ready to do everything for Jerusalem, but the city was not willing to open up her gates to his mercy. This is the deep mystery of human freedom which always retains that sad possibility of rejecting the grace of God. Free man, subject yourself to a voluntary servitude, so that Jesus won’t have to say of you what He is said to have told Saint Teresa about others: "Teresa, I was willing. But men were not".

How indeed are we responding to the countless promptings of the Holy Spirit, who seeks to make us holy in the midst of our ordinary duties and surroundings? Each day how often do we say "yes" to God and ‘no’ our selfishness, to our laziness and to everything that amounts to a lack of love, even if it is only something small.

HOLY THURSDAY – WASHING OF THE FEET
At the Last Supper, Jesus washed his apostles’ feet to give them an example of love and service. Its re-enactment is a reminder that all Christians are called to love and to serve others. At our mass at OLV on Holy Thursday, April 21st at 7:00 pm, we will need 12 volunteers who would like to help in the re-enactment of the washing of the apostles’ feet. If you are interested, please leave your name and telephone number with the Secretary (819 986-3763) and someone will contact you regarding details.

EASTER FLOWERS
A donation basket is available at the top of the stairs at OLV for our Easter Flowers. If you would prefer to donate a plant in honour of a loved one, it would be much appreciated. You may indicate on the sheets the type of plant that you will be bringing.

THE APPARITIONS AT MEDJUGORJE

The second instalment of the visionaries’ stories is inserted in this week’s bulletin regarding the appearance of the Blessed Virgin in the village of Medjugorje.Father Darryl Kennedy of St Patrick’s in Ottawa has agreed to come and speak about the Medjugorje experience. Father Kennedy has visited Medjugorje 25 times and in June this year, will once again be leading a group on a pilgrimage to the site. In order to gauge interest in hearing Father Kennedy’s story, a sign- up sheet is available at the back of both churches. Father Kennedy will be available in early May.

"Only good things are happening at Medjugorje. People are praying there. People are adoring the Eucharist, and people are turning to God" - these are the words of the late Pope Jean Paul II.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE

International Development Day – A Huge Success

On April 2nd, an event was held for the Share Lent Campaign of Development and Peace at the King Pin Bowling Lanes. This event was organized by a committee which represents all the Catholic churches in the area: OLV, St. Malachy, St. Grégoire, St. Luc, Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, and L’Ange-Gardien. There was bowling during the day, exhibit of photos and videos, entertainment by the Heart and Soul Gospel Choir, a spaghetti supper, and a guest speaker from Columbia.

Close to 200 people took part in the event, including 140 people who came to hear Fr. Henry Ramirez talk about the work being done by one of our Development and Peace partners in Columbia called Justice and Peace. A total of $1,500 was raised and will be forwarded to the Gatineau Diocesan Council of Development and Peace, to be included in the 2011 Share Lent Campaign funds. A special thank you to the parishioners of OLV and St. Malachy who participated in this event.

Reminder - Development and Peace Share Lent donations will be collected until the end of April.

DID YOU KNOW?

Our Lady of Victory - This title was given to our Blessed Mother in honor of an important historical event, where Europe was threatened by a Turkish invasion. On October 7th 1571, the battle of Lepanto was fought and a decisive sea victory resulted in protecting the Christian faith. When the then reigning Pope St. Pius V realized the great danger the church was in, he called upon all the Marian groups in Rome to rally the faithful to pray fervently through the intersession of Our Lady to protect Europe from this grave threat. The faithful, through the rosary, prayed for victory and Europe was saved. In honor of her intersession, Pope Pius V named a feast day, Our Lady of Victory. The feast was later changed to Our Lady of the Rosary, so both titles refer to the same date.
