Reading II Ephesians 4. 1 -13 Gospel Mark 6.15 - 20
Food for Thought
  • Because of Jesus’ ascension to the Father, humankind now has a place in heaven. We will no longer be out of place there. ‘’One of our own’’ sits at God’s right hand.
  • If I have difficulty appreciating this, I can look at the disciples in the scene. Even at the end they seem not to understand.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH?     WELCOME!

Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest.

Thank you and welcome.

FATHER GYAN
Father Gyan has sent a message this week and it follows. Please continue to remember him in your prayers:

I am at a Catholic hospital run by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, for tests and treatment. Due to excessive heat (48 degrees) I could not undergo any test for the first 3 days. Now the doctors are looking into my problems. So far it has been good.

Thanks
(Fr. Gyan)

ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Rising Again: On this date Samuel Morse sent the first telegram in the form of a question, “What hath God wrought?” It’s a great question for today, for it seems a bit odd to be glad and celebrate that Jesus has left us. What was God thinking? Didn’t Jesus know how much we’d need him? When we celebrate the rising of Christ at the Ascension, we need to keep it in the context of all of his risings – the rising of Easter, the rising he accomplishes in each of us through Baptism, and the rising that he will accomplish in us at the end of time. All of the prayers insist that the solemnity of the Ascension is primarily about how we join in the Ascension. “It is our glory and our hope,” says the Opening Prayer. The Ascension, then, is something that God is doing for us, so that, as the Alternative Opening Prayer says, we “might seek him in his glory.” In Jerusalem the place of the Ascension was open to the sky until the middle of the 12th. century, presumably to allow Jesus to “come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven” (Acts 1.11), but it also allows us to see that there is a path for us to follow, a way to rise with him, a way, even now, to be Easter with him. So Christ has not left us after all. That is why we no longer observe the former custom of extinguishing the paschal candle after the gospel on this day. Easter is not yet over.
