Reading I Deuteronomy io.12 – 13a; 11, 18, 26 – 28, 32 Responsorial Psalm Lord, be my rock of safety

Food for Thought
  • Put these words of mine in your heart and in your soul. ‘’Scripture repeats this message in so many ways, in so many places, yet I am often more comfortable understanding with my head than with my heart. Perhaps my head helps me to ‘’keep my distance’’
  • It is not enough to say the right words, I must act on them. Lord, teach me again.

ARE YOU NEW TO OUR PARISH? WELCOME!
Welcome to those who want to make our parish their faith home. You may have come from other places. You may have been “away for a while”. Be assured that we love to have you among us. We would appreciate it very much if you identified yourself at Mass. It would also help if you would take the time to fill out a registration form. The next time you are with us, you may leave it in the collection basket or give it to one of the ushers or to the priest. Thank you and welcome.

NOW WE ARE REALLY BACK TO ORDINARY TIME – THE YEAR OF MATTHEW
When it comes to the dominant reading – the Gospel reading – in Ordinary Time, we simply walk through one of the Gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke). This year –Year A – is devoted to Matthew’s Gospel.

Traditionally, the more general features of Matthew’s Gospel appear only when we read the Gospel in its entirety. That is something that few of us do. We sort of get used to hearing little snippets of the Gospel at Sunday Mass. The potential problem with this is that we miss out on the overall thrust of a particular Gospel.

For example, Matthew’s Gospel is very Jewish in character. Matthew makes Jesus into a teacher and interpreter of Jewish law. Matthew’s Jesus brings the Jewish law to its most eloquent and definitive expression – where law is not a burden, but a trusted friend and where Jesus himself, as faithful Son of God, is obedient to it.

Another characteristic of Matthew’s Gospel is that it is made up of five major speeches by Jesus and six major narratives about Jesus. That gives Matthew the opportunity to present Jesus as teacher, the one who preaches the coming of God’s kingdom. The narratives, on the other hand, give us the image of Jesus as leader for the crowds of people seeking health and liberation from pain and death and experiencing in Jesus the healing power of God.

VISIT FROM BISHOP FELIX TOPPO FROM THE HOME DIOCESE OF FATHER GYAN IN EASTERN INDIA
Bishop Toppo will be in Quebec City for the Eucharist Congress. He is taking this opportunity at the same time to visit Father Gyan and his parishes. He will be joining us for the Mass at St. Malachy on June 7th and at Our Lady of Victory on June 8th.

Development and Peace
has launched an appeal for donations for the victims of Cyclone Nargis, which devastated Burma on May 2, 2008, leaving 134,000 dead or missing. “At this time, the greatest threat to the millions of Burmese who have been injured, traumatized and otherwise affected by this disaster is that they be forgotten,” says Michael Casey, Executive Director of Development and Peace.

Development and Peace and Caritas Internationalis, the Catholic Church’s international development network, are focusing all their efforts to lend urgent assistance to the Burmese population who is in dire need. Assistance sent to Burma from humanitarian agencies around the world is currently being distributed via the parishes throughout the country. An international team of Caritas network experts is organized in Bangkok , Thailand and inside Burma to support this humanitarian operation.”

The relief effort includes the provision of food, medical and water purification equipment, as well as temporary shelter materials to at least 60 000 victims of the cyclone. Caritas Internationalis has set an initial fundraising objective of $ 8 million for the next three months, although community reconstruction and rehabilitation will take several years. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has pledged to match any donation made to Burma before June 13, 2008. Urging Canadians to respond to this appeal, Mr. Casey adds: “by this gesture, let us send a solidarity message to the Burmese population that they have not been forgotten.”

Contributions can be made by telephone (1 888 664-3387), online at www.devp.org, or sent by cheque (marked “Emergency: Burma ”) to the following address:

RELAY FOR CANCER

For the past year Gale has been supporting a new hairstyle. She has been doing this to donate her hair to the Cancer Society’s wig program. Here is where we need your help.

She is taking part, along with the Pearson family, in Cancer’s Relay for Life. What we would like to do is issue out a challenge to all of you. For $1.00 you fill out a ballot and guess how long her hair is. The one closest to the length gets the pleasure of cutting her hair during our Fellowship on June 1st.You must be present.

All monies raised will be given to Gale as a donation from us to the Cancer Society.

Gale has chosen to donate her hair to the Angel Hair for Kids. This program provides quality wigs & hair replacements to financially disadvantaged children who have experienced medical hair loss.

Can we as a Christian community help Gale and the Angel Hair for Kids achieve their goals?

Please step forward, take a guess, become a hairdresser and join in the fun on Sunday, June 1st.

I know this is late notice — but have we ever turned down a challenge?

Thanks

signed, Monique
