SANCTUARY LAMP - O.L.V. :
September 4th to 17th for the special intentions of Veronica Smith.

LET US MAKE SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH SPECIAL :
Like last year, we want to give some special attention to the beginning of our pastoral activities for this year. Our joint Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) has designated Sunday, September 18th for that. We would like to bring our two parishes, OLV and ST. Malachy together in one mass on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. After mass we would like to see all parishioners together in the church hall where over some refreshments our PPC will launch our pastoral activities for this year. That should take about 1 1\2 hours. May we count on your presence there, because we need every parishioner of our two parishes "to keep us as parishes alive----(and we don't mean finances)" that by the way, is the motto for our pastoral launch this year.

As a build-up to that launch you see "the canopy" or sort of tent at the entrance of the church. At first, it may look strange, but it is very much in line with what followers of Jesus Christ we are: People on a Journey.

PARISHIONERS OF ST. MALACHY - PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO MASS ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH:
Just for once, there will be no mass at St. Malachy that Saturday evening, but your are asked to join O.L.V. for mass that Sunday morning. We already do a number of things together. What better way to express and strengthen that, than in coming together around the Table of the Lord Jesus? After all, he is the one in whose name we gather and know each other as brothers and sisters.

NEXT BAPTISM TO BE CELEBRATED ON OCTOBER 2ND:
October 2nd is the Sunday for our next Baptism. That means that we start our preparation on Monday September 12th to be followed by Monday September 19 & 26th. The prayerful support of the parishioners is counted on.

ANOTHER YEAR IS UPON US:
It is a "funny" thing with what we consider the beginning of another year. The calendar begins on the first of January. The Church year begins the first Sunday of Advent. The school year begins at the end of August - the beginning of September.

As for the pastoral activities in the Parish, we have gotten used to the idea that we let them sort of coincide with the school year. That means, in fact, that we hope to breathe some new life into our pastoral activities at about this time. It is in that spirit that joint OLV and St. Malachy Parish Pastoral Council met this week. That is the body that oversees, directs, encourages the pastoral activities of our two parishes as they are grouped under the four poles of Church life: liturgy, faith formation, fellowship, service/outreach.

Needless to say, that is quite a challenge to-day. What it comes down to is how do we continue the mission of Jesus Christ that he now wants to accomplish through us who are his church, his Body. Naturally, we don't do that on our own. He shares his Spirit with us for that purpose. That same Spirit has provided us last year with the basic guidelines and orientation that we try to follow. These guidelines and orientation come in the form of an important little document that our Bishop Roger Ebaucher gave us on Pentecost Sunday 2004. Discovering Jesus Christ: The Path to Freedom. That is the document that will guide and inspire us over the next little while.

We are wrestling with it. There is work to be done. Let us all pitch in.

FOOD FOR THE WEEK : DID WE MISS IT.
We began that item in our Church bulletin at the first of Advent, we have not made much of it in the summer months. We'll try to pick it up again. So it may be helpful to recall what was intended with that item in our Sunday Bulletin.

When we come to sunday Mass, half of the Mass is devoted to the proclamation of the Scripture readings followed by the priest's homily. This homily is supposed to take it's lead or inspiration from these Scripture readings . So that first part of the Mass is potentially an immense resource for our faith life, for us a parish, for our households-of-faith, for us as individual believers. But what happens all too often is that we soon forget about the Scripture readings once we have left the church. "They sort of stay in the Church. (Continued next week)
