FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT       Life everlasting

Reading I Ezekiel 37:12-14 (prophecy of restoration)
Reading II Romans 8:8-11 (the flesh and the Spirit)
Gospel John 11:1-45 (the raising of Lazarus)
Key Passage

Jesus said to Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11:25-26)

Yes, we face death eventually. But even in this life we experience deathly things. On all scores, Jesus Christ is God's assurance that we are meant for life.

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN OF EASTER IS IN SIGHT:
With winter hanging on as it does it is hard to believe that Easter is that close. However, we are getting things in place to celebrate the great event that the season of Lent aims at: the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is the source of our Christian identity. The Christian life is unrecognizable without it. Yes, these coming two weeks are very intense. Our participation in what we do as Church is not just optional or desirable, but a must. At least it is hoped that we can find a way to set other things aside and to give priority to what marks us as Christians.

We keep our focus on the upcoming Three Great Days, starting on Holy Thursday evening, including Good Friday and Holy Saturday and concluding on Easter Sunday. Wherever possible, let us observe these important days of our Christian faith. Just this one weekend of the year doing other things than what we normally do on weekends, just because we are Christians. The Muslims can do it, the Jews can do it. Surely, as Christians we can do it too.

Yes, these principal services are all being held at O.L.V., but they are also to include St. Malachy. If at any time our two parishes should be together it is at these services which define us as Christians. After all, does not the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ have everything to do with transcending and breaking through difference and barriers?

Please note: No individual confessions are scheduled during the Three Great Days. The reason for that is that Lent ends on Holy Thursday evening. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, whether celebrated individually or communally, is properly a Lenten practice. In this way we keep the Three Great Days free for celebrating the immense mystery of our faith.

THE ARCHBISHOP INVITES US TO THE CHRISM MASS:
The holy oil, used for Baptism and Confirmation and for the anointing of the sick are consecrated and blessed at the Chrism Mass over which the Bishop presides. It puts in focus that as baptized-confirmed people we have become a consecrated people filled with the Spirit of God's holiness.

Once the oils are consecrated and blessed, they are distributed to representatives from the parishes where these oils will be used in the course of the year. These oils are brought in procession into our church at the Holy Thursday celebration.

The Chrism Mass is celebrated at the Cathedral on Wednesday of Holy Week, March 23, 7:30 p.m. The Archbishop invites all parishioners. It would be good if we had a decent representation from both our parishes to honour our place in the diocese and our bond with the bishop.

WASHING FEET ON HOLY THURSDAY:
This is very much part of the Holy Thursday service. In this, at first sight, embarrassing gesture the basic thrust of what we celebrate in the Three Great Days is summed up: God's love for us, God's becoming the servant of us all. If we feel uneasy about this strange gesture, we are in good company. The apostle Peter did not want to hear of it either when Jesus approached him. In Peter's estimation it was not very becoming to Jesus to do that sort of thing.

In Jesus, God wants to be servant of us all. Hence, all should feel free to be part of this strange, but powerful gesture. It is so much part of this Holy Evening.

NEXT SUNDAY - PALM SUNDAY:
A group of our younger children will be more involved in the Palm Procession and in the Passion Narrative. It involves a lot or work, but it is worth all the effort.
